Made in Clerkenwell Summer 2015: Interior Design highlights

Our bi-annual Made in Clerkenwell: Open Studios will be taking place next month. Avoid the high street and opt for handmade!

From 7-10 May, we will open our doors for you to explore our 2 fascinating Victorian studio buildings in the heart of London’s historic Clerkenwell. Both venues are located within convenient strolling distance - start your visit in Clerkenwell Green and find St John’s Square just 2 minutes away.

In this series of blogposts we are very excited to profile the range of covetable products on sale. Once you’ve decorated yourself with fine accessories and jewellery, why not focus on your home? In this post, we will be previewing the range of interior goods, showcasing ceramics, textiles, quirky lamps and stunning storage solutions.

CERAMICS

Olivia and Sally McGill

We love Olivia and Sally McGill's range of beautifully crafted enamel ceramics. Olivia is a freelance conservator with a studio in North London. She specialises in Ceramic, Glass and Enamel conservation as well as other small decorative art objects. Sally has recently been exploring fractals, the geometry of natural shapes that are repeated at different scales such as coastlines, clouds and mountain ranges. This has made for a stunning collaboration.

Elizabeth Auriol

International artist-silversmith Elizabeth Peers draws the inspiration for her unique, feminine forms from the human body. She is often drawn to unusual markings and characteristics and is captured by the playfulness of a curve, crevice or crease. Elizabeth uses chasing and a free-form raising technique to produce these folds, bulges and undulations that are iconic in her work. Elizabeth states, “the owner of a piece of mine should imbue a little of themselves within that piece and treasure it”.

TEXTILES

Laura Felicity Design

Laura Felicity’s silk-screen printing skills and hand drawn patterns come together to create elegant handmade wallpapers and interior accessories. Laura finds her inspiration in the beauty and delicacy of patterns in a range of different areas, from the softness of nature to the clean lines of geometry. Her  aim is always to design a piece that has an atmosphere of freshness and depth, inviting people into the pattern. The colour palette is classic, based on rustic looks and a light touch. All product materials are sourced within Britain and the collection is completely hand drawn, handmade and silk screen printed within the UK. Laura Felicity Design wants to bring a sense of the traditional, handcrafted, high quality era of British industry to all products.

Sally Evans – From Brighton with Love

Sally Evans set up “From Brighton With Love” after moving to the city in summer 2012. Her lovely knitted cushions and poufs are handmade in 100% wool or cotton and fasten with five shell buttons to enhance the seaside feel. She uses various techniques including some of her own invention, as a result each range has a luxurious, tactile and 3D element to them. The colours are inspired by the vibrancy of Brighton and its surrounding area; even the pink is like a stick of Brighton Rock!

GLASS

Roberta de Caro – Peace of Glass

Roberta aims to bring the timeless charm of coloured glass into people lives by creating mesmerising pieces for home decor and gardens. The glass comes mostly in sheets, which is cut by hand and arranged in layers to make a design, before firing it in a kiln. Different temperatures are used to create various effects and to give each piece its individual texture and depth, which in turns creates a unique play of light. All the designs Roberta uses for her crafts are original - ranging from playful representations of London-inspired cityscapes to colourful renditions of landscapes in bloom. She explains, “it is such a simple pleasure to see natural light pour through fused glass, I believe it grounds us and brings a sense of peace within us, hence the name ‘Peace Of Glass’.”

FUNCTIONAL ACCESSORIES

Victoria King

By reuising found objects, Victoria King creates pieces that captivate people's imaginations through breathing life back into something that could be considered useless. Victoria will be showing her bespoke tin lamps. Each lamp is made from a unique vintage tin box, all sourced by hand from junk shops, market stalls, and Vide Grenier markets in France. Each one is bespoke with its own special character. High quality brass fittings, Edison filament light bulbs and braided fabric power cords complete the vintage feel. Victoria will have 25 lamps to sell, which are complete one-offs made especially for our summer show.

Kreis Design

Swiss born designer Nikki Kreis is motivated by a desire to create furniture, products and spaces that enhance people's lives because they work beautifully. This love of functionality is infused with a twist of humour and a rich experience of different cultures. At the beginning of 2012, Nikki set up her studio Kreisdesign.  Inspired by its vibrancy and energy as a cultural and creative hub, she chose to base her business in London, where she develops products and furniture, working directly with manufacturers and retailers. Working with wood, felt, fur and metal, she gives each material space to be true to itself so that her products can develop their own identity while staying close to their essence.

  1. Wonderful blog! I found it while surfing around on Yahoo News. Do you have any suggestions on how to get listed in Yahoo News? I’ve been trying for a while but I never seem to get there! Appreciate it.
